![]() ![]() A Brief Introduction to 6 Generations of Intel Core Processors The technologies are advancing so fast that sometimes it make us doubt if really have something good. This happens for example with processors, you know every one or two years Intel offers us a new version of processor. Intel Core is the name that Intel has been using for its micros since 2008 or so. To understand better, you must know development cycle used by this manufacturer which it calls ‘Tick / Tock’. This way of micros has two phases, one called Tick and the other is called Tock. Tick The micros are only small functional blocks that are connected with each other. If we reduce the size of these blocks, we can perform more tasks using the same hardware. When Intel makes a tick, it has the minimum size that can be used to create transistors that are the building blocks with which these devices are created. Tock The architecture of a processor is the map that defines the elements that compose it and how they are interconnected. A different way of distributing the blocks can make the micro behave quite differently. This is the way of working of Intel, firstly, it makes a reduction in the size of its transistors and then improves the architecture or adapt to the needs it wants to meet. ![]() The First Generation The first generation Intel Core came to replace Core 2. Not all the first generation Cores are the same as in 2008 it was i7, in 2009 it was i5 and in 2010 i3. As you can understand the architecture of i7 2008, it has little to do with that of March 1, 2010. There are versions that use lithographs both 45 and 32 nanometers. Among the improvements over previous micros, this adds the memory controller inside and has the integrated graphics in the same package. The Second Generation It was a tock i.e. a new architecture. It appeared in early 2011. With AVX instruction set, it was designed to accelerate image processing and 3D sound. Other instructions as AES used in cryptographic programs were also added. Its lithography is 32 nanometers and the graphics card is added into the micro. It is 10% to 20% faster than the previous generation regardless of the tremendous differences in graphics. The Third Generation ![]() With a reduction in size, specifically up to 22 nanometers, it is a tick and its codename is Ivy Bridge. Almost 1-5% speed improved and about 20% betterment was in graphics. It adds support for PCIe 3.0. DirectX 11 support is added and the cache size increased to level three. The Fourth Generation It is a tock and its codename is Haswell. Intel tried to improve energy efficiency in mind without losing market share of portable devices, especially consumption is reduced when the equipment is not used. There is between 5 and 10% improvement in the number of instructions per clock cycle. As in each of the new generations, it is especially noticeable in the integrated graphics card. The included in these was twice as fast as that found in a micro second generation. The Fifth Generation It is a tick, to reduced 14 nanometer size, and its codename is Broadwell. It is half smaller than in the fourth generation. It followed the path set by Haswell in consumption with less than 5% of improvement over Haswell for same clock frequency. The Sixth Generation It is a tock and went in the market about the same time that Broadwell namely Skylake. Intel added technologies such as configurable TDP designed for 2-in-1 equipment and tablets. It follows the path to add new instruction sets such as AVX3.2 with less than 5% improvement at the same clock speed. You can read a detailed Intel Skylake review here. ![]() Add a comment |
